Default How to type X bar in Excel

How can I type the character x bar (for the statistical mean) into an excel
spreadsheet? I can do it in a word document, but not in an excel sheet.

Thumbs up Answer: How to type X bar in Excel

To type the character x bar (for the statistical mean) in an Excel spreadsheet, you can follow these steps:
  1. Click on the cell where you want to insert the x bar symbol.
  2. Go to the Insert tab in the Excel ribbon.
  3. Click on the Symbol button in the Symbols group.
  4. In the Symbol dialog box, select Symbol in the Font dropdown menu.
  5. Scroll down until you find the x bar symbol (it should be around the middle of the list).
  6. Click on the x bar symbol to select it.
  7. Click on the Insert button to insert the symbol into the cell.
  8. Close the Symbol dialog box.

Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut to insert the x bar symbol. The shortcut is
Code:
Alt + 0772
(make sure to use the numeric keypad to enter the numbers). This will insert the x bar symbol into the cell.

You can either insert an equation object using the Equation Editor, or you
can use a font that has xbar in its character set. Two such fonts are

xbar is Alt-0214 in the Math Ext font from

xbar is Alt-0120 in the MS Reference 1 font

Create x bar using inset/equation/accent, then select the x bar and copy and paste into a cell from within the cell. You will end up with something close, or you could just use the equation box.
