Default Word, Excel and PowerPoint look for my printer before they open, w

Every time I open one of the Microsoft Office applications it first looks for
my printer, if it is available it opens quickly but if it isn't it looks for
up to 2 min and then tells me a printer is not available. Is there some
setting I need to change? Why are the two linked if I am not requesting to
print a document, just open it? Would love it if anyone has a resolution for
this issue.

The applications need to know the settings and limitations of the
printer in order to display pages properly. For instance, one printer
may have minimum margins smaller than another; an Excel workbook that
prints on one page on the first printer may require two pages on the
second. (I have a lot of experience with that.)

Maybe you could change your default printer to a local printer driver (the
printer doesn't have to exist physically).
