Default excel changes a number to a date and i don't want it to

I put 4 - 6 in a cell and it automatical changes it to 04 jun and i don't
want it to. How do i turn this function off?

Either preformat the cell as text, or prefix the entry with an
apostrophe (')

Select the cell. Then on the menu select Format / Cells and pick
General.
