Default sumif-add amount to another cell based on two criteria

I have a list of expense categories and the months of the year across top.
At the very top one drop-down cell with list of expense categories and
another with drop-down list of Months. Third cell is amount from receipt to
be inputed and added to appropiate category and month. would sumif work or
am i looking at the wrong formula?
