Default How to create collapsible sections in Excel

Hello,
I'd like to be able to create collapsible sections in an Excel worksheet
(2003).
So a column would appear down the left-hand side which would have the
equivalent of + and - that could be clicked to expose/hide the rows within a
specified range.
Has anyone done that?
Thanks for any tips.

Thumbs up Answer: How to create collapsible sections in Excel

Yes, you can create collapsible sections in Excel using the Group and Outline feature. Here's how to do it:
  1. Select the rows or columns that you want to group together.
  2. Right-click on the selection and choose "Group" from the context menu.
  3. A small button with a minus sign will appear to the left of the grouped rows or columns. Clicking on this button will collapse the group and hide the rows or columns within it.
  4. To expand the group and show the hidden rows or columns, click on the plus sign that appears in place of the minus sign.

You can also use the keyboard shortcut
Code:
Alt + Shift + Right Arrow
to group selected rows or columns, and
Code:
Alt + Shift + Left Arrow
to ungroup them.

Additionally, you can customize the level of detail that is displayed when you collapse a group by using the "Outline" feature. Here's how:

1. Click on the "Data" tab in the ribbon.
2. Click on the "Group" button in the "Outline" section.
3. In the "Settings" dialog box, choose the level of detail that you want to display when you collapse a group. For example, you can choose to display only the summary rows or columns, or you can choose to display the detail rows or columns up to a certain level.
4. Click "OK" to apply the settings.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

In xl2003 menus, I can use:

Select the rows to group
Data|Group and outline|group

Use data|Group and outline|settings if you want the "button" on the top (or
bottom).

Another option would be to apply Data|Subtotals to your range. You'll get those
outlining symbols and even a subtotal row between each group.

And while you're "tinkering around", as Max suggests,
here's some keyboard shortcuts:

Select the Row or Column range, then;

To group,
<Shift <Alt <RightArrow

To ungroup,
<Shift <Alt <LeftArrow

To retain the Groups, but toggle hide/unhide the symbols,
<Ctrl <8
Using the "8" that's under the function keys, *not* from the num keypad.
