Default Vary Colors in the Same Data Series

What do I need to do so to enable the box to click to Vary Colors by Point?
Currently this option and the one above it (Series Lines) are "greyed out"
for my chart.

Clustered bar graph. Excel 2003. There are 9 data points in the series, six
of them have non-zero values. Many thanks!

Charts with more than one data series cannot use that feature. I expect the
concern is that two points from different series might get same colour and
confuse viewer.

You can still re-colour each point one-by-one. Click on point twice (not a
double click but click-pause-click, to get one point selected - watch for
markers around the 'block' making the chart point) Then use Format on menu
(or right click to open Format Select Data Point) now you can select a
colour.
