Default charts look different if you put in data into the x axis

when i make a chart using data for the y axis it looks completely different
if i leave the source data for the x axis blank. as soon as i select the
source data for the x axis the whole chart become messed up. here are two
pictures to show what i'm talking about. the one that looks weirder uses
data in the x axis. essentially the x axis is dates. (i'm using excel 2002
btw)
