Bug? Pasting values instead of formulas...
I recently upgraded to Excel 2003, and noticed that often when I copy and
paste cells, Excel pastes the value, not the formula. But it's very inconsistent. If I copy a cell and then paste it multiple times in different cells, after about the 3rd or 5th time it suddenly switches from pasting formulas to pasting the original value. It's inconsistent as to when it happens (sometimes even the first time I paste). I use ctl-c to copy and ctl-v to paste. Any ideas? |

I am guessing at some point you are transitioning to a new row or column.
You can get around this by selecting all the places you want to paste to by holding down the control key, then doing a "paste special." I don't think this is my issue (though isn't every new cell either a new row
or a new column?). Sometimes this happens the very first time I try to paste, other times it's much later after I've already pasted successfully several times. I've used Excel for many years and am pretty expert in it, and have never experienced this until switcing to Excel 2003. Are you pasting between different workbooks? Any chance that you don't have
both workbooks open in the same instance of excel? Are you copying only the visible cells (like in a range that was filtered)--but not the hidden rows? I am copying within the same worksheet in the same workbook, and no cells are
hidden. Any ideas? "Dave Peterson" wrote: Are you pasting between different workbooks? Any chance that you don't have both workbooks open in the same instance of excel? None from me.

Something else did occur to me -- what about your autosave feature?? If it
is set to save frequently, perhaps it is saving before your nth paste and is eliminating your formula from the clipboard? Its kind of a long shot, but I would at least take a gander at it. I'm not sure if any of the stuff in the clipboard would exist after a save (even
an autosave). But maybe there's an event macro that is converting the formulas to values after the paste??? Eric wrote: Something else did occur to me -- what about your autosave feature?? It's set to autosave every 10 minutes (I think that was the initial default
setting). The error seems to happen much more frequently than that. "Eric" wrote: Something else did occur to me -- what about your autosave feature?? There are no macros showing, but would this kind of thing be hidden somehow?

You could have macros that aren't apparent (not quite hidden, though).
Maybe you could experiment a bit. Open excel in safe mode: windows start button|Run excel /safe then open your file and spend some time testing it. If you find that everything works fine, then maybe (still just maybe), it is a macro. Chip Pearson has some notes on how to diagnose startup errors: http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm And Jan Karel Pieterse has more notes: http://www.jkp-ads.com/Articles/StartupProblems.asp These sites describe how to do the detective work to find out if it is a macro (among other stuff).
