Default Linking workbooks unpredictable

Have a strange issue. Sometimes I am unable to link two worksheets together.
In some cases when I enter either "+" or "=" in the cell and then click on
the cell in the other workbook that I want to link it does not work. I
thought the issue was related to the workbooks being in different directories
but when i moved them into the same directory it still did not work. Anyone
seen this issue? If so what was the fix.

I'm guessing that you have the two workbooks open in different instances of
excel.

Close one of the workbooks (and that instance of excel), then use File|Open in
the remaining instance to open that file once again.

Then try once more.
